to leave. so, don, what do you know -- dan, about this speech. is it done? >> we're toll the president putting sort of the last points on that speech and will be making some tweaks before he actually rolls it out tomorrow. we're told by advisers here at the white house that this will not be a chance for him to lay out policies but rather will be having or delivering a hopeful speech. making the admission that clearly you can't settle every debate here in washington, but that you have to look for areas of common ground. the president will talk about some of the challenges that he will be facing over the next four years, certainly some of those key domestic issues the president will be tackling, immigration reform, gun control, and finally the president hoping to get some public support to push his agenda through congress. plans to engage the public to put pressure on members of congress. this is being viewed as sort of act one, where the president makes broad themes. act two is between the president will release more details during his state of the union address next month. >> dan, i'm

hickenlooper, connecticut governor dan malloy, illinois governor jack markell have all announced in the past few days announced ambitious legislative proposals on gun reform in their own states. and of course federally, tomorrow ahead of schedule, president obama is set to unveil his own set of proposals in response to the newtown school shooting. the white house releasing this picture today of vice president biden, presenting his findings to the president and other cabinet members in a gun policy meeting. >> i can tell you that tomorrow the president and vice president will hold an event here at the white house to unveil a package of concrete proposals to reduce gun violence and prevent future tragedies like the one in newtown, connecticut. they will be joined by children from around the country who wrote the president letters in the wake of that tragedy, expressing their concerns about gun violence and school safety along with their parents that event will be at approximately 11:45 a.m. i will not get ahead of the president in terms of what his package of proposals will include. i will sim

in this plane. dan springer is live in seattle. what is the immediate impact of all this, dan? >> reporter: martha, officially it is a crisis for boeing. canceled flights, upset passengers all across the world. within hours of the faa directive to ground all 787s, other countries followed suit. airlines are scrambling to get other aircraft to fill in for the dreamliners. in most case that is not possible. in san jose, two flights to tokyo have been canceled. two are in jeopardy. this nonstop route was opened friday to a lot of fanfare. the faa is grounding the 787 because of quote, a potential battery fire risk. it was triggered by an emergency landing of a 787 in japan due to apparent overheatings of a battery, second time in eight years. business leaders who worked for years getting new flights to asia. they don't fault the airlines. they're upset with boeing. >> this is a company that put passengers ahead of profits and made a wise decision to make sure that boeing works out these kinks before they put another plane up in the air. >> reporter: and 49 dreamliners were in service. united

here to the chamber of commerce and dan gallagher on the financial regulatory system. president obama unveils his proposal for reducing gun valent earlier this afternoon, featuring an assault weapons ban, a ban on high capacity magazines and a method to close loopholes in the background check system. here are some of his remarks at first, it's time for congress to require a universal background check for anyone trying to buy a gun. [applause] the law already requires background checks to be wrong coming over the last 14 years, that has kept 1.5 million of them on the wrong people from getting their hands on a gun. but it's hard to enforce that law when as many as 40% of all gun purchases are conducted without a background check. it is not safe, it is not smart. it is not fair to responsible gun buyers or sellers. if you like to buy a gun, whether it is from a licensed dealer or private seller, you should be set at least have to show your not a felon or somebody legally prohibited from buying one. this is common sense. an overwhelming majority of americans agree with us on the need for

dan fifer is in front of her. you have the white house council and the deputy chief of staff but who is leaving. is there a problem with the president not pursuing more women in his cabinet? are you troubled by that? >> to me this almost seems swift voting. taking a person's strength and trying to create a weakness out of it. the president has about 50% of white house staff as women. if you look at his appointments to the court we have three women on the supreme court, two of them appointed by the president. >> big cabinet jobs, white men. >> the cabinett is not fully fleshed out. >> the big ones. >> please don't diminish cabinet level positions as some as big. for a domestic policy guy many cabinet positions are very important. one thing is that is disengenious to show the picture when 50% of the staff in the white house is women. this is a president who has expanded health care opportunities for women and stood up on his first legislation. if you look at his policies and practices he is changing the focus on the country. >> i think a lot of women would disagree this is swift voting

a matter of minutes ago actually dan pfeiffer, one of the top aides to the t president put out a note that politico breaux this morning where they said that house republicans were considering, among other things, default or possibly a government shutdown. some of the dramatic steps that the republicans of the house are considering. pfeiffer referred to that specifically today saying just another reason -- just one more way that house republicans could make themselves even less popular than they already are right now. we have a pretty good sense of what we're going to hear the president say when it comes to the debt ceiling and fiscal issues. jay carney sort of telegraphed these statements during the briefings last week, the last one was on wednesday where he said, and i pulled up the notes to get it right. he said there are only two options to deal with the debt limit. congress can pay its bill or fail to act and put the nation into default. the line in the sand was clearly drawn during those news conferences with the press secretary jay carney last week. and the president is going to
